We have handed over the reins for this review to Adam York, better known as Your Average Guy, and long-term fan of our shoes and boots. This time around, he took a pair of our Sanremo espadrilles on holiday with him.
For as long as I can remember, espadrilles have been my go-to for the summer season. They can be slipped on with ease in a pinch and typically offer comfortable wear all day long. However, experience has told me that not every pair is created equal. Some brands have inevitably caused me a variety of issues (inferior quality, poorly fitted and rubbing along the side of my toes and heels, which is а nightmare scenario when on holiday!).
As a big fan of the Herring Shoes brand (regular readers will have seen quite a selection of different pairs on my fashion blog), I wanted to give their Sanremo espadrilles a trial run to see if they hit the mark (the odds are definitely in their favour!)
Men’s espadrille style and design
The Herring Sanremo espadrilles have taken the classic design and improved on it tenfold. Rather than standard cotton fabric, the shoes feature a premium suede upper. They have a cemented rubber sole to enhance traction (ideal for poolside areas with splashes of water, which are a potential hazard for slips and falls). The colour is definitely a top-selling point. A beautiful biscuit tan hue that complements the traditional summertime wardrobe of whites, tans, and browns.
They boast a lightweight construction, allowing them to be packed into your luggage. The espadrilles have been lovingly crafted in Portugal, and the overall quality is evident in all aspects of the design.

Espadrilles are undoubtedly a summer essential that pairs easily with a variety of outfit styles. My top choice would be a pair of slim-fit shorts (such as chinos or linen) and a lightweight tee or Henley, which will work for any hot-weather destination. Alternatively, you could opt for a more dressy ensemble with cropped trousers and a tailored button-up shirt.
If you are a fan of the poolside, then they can be a great footwear choice to match your swim shorts. They can be slipped on fast when you want to hit the bar for that delicious cocktail!
Sizing and value for money
For sizing, I opted for my standard UK 8/EU 42, which is an excellent fit that is neither too tight nor too loose. Your feet can easily slot inside without any trouble.
The cost of espadrilles can vary wildly from budget to premium, and the Sanremo sit perfectly between those two points. It is a price point that can easily be justified, chiefly thanks to the quality, comfort and eye-catching good looks that they provide.
Conclusion
After spending some time wearing the Herring Sanremo espadrilles during a recent trip to Rhodes, I am more than happy to report that these shoes have surpassed my expectations. Exceptional design and style, unparalleled quality and comfort are all wrapped up in Herring’s fantastic packaging. Even the espadrilles include dust bags and a shoe horn).
