You cannot have failed to notice the cold, wet weather we have been experiencing lately. Guys… this is winter and there is more to come. While most of us would rather rush through these inclement months, you cannot refuse to go outside! This is where men’s winter boots are your friends, but which ones do you choose?
Rubber-soled men’s winter boots
“You need a quality leather upper and a rubber sole,” advises Jason Simmonds, Herring’s MD. “You can treat and care for leather to make sure it can withstand the elements while it also moulds to the shape of your feet to give you extra comfort. A rubber sole is also critical in winter to keep your feet dry and warm.”
A rubber sole does not necessarily mean rolling out the commando, cleated numbers and stomping into the office as if you are about to climb Mount Everest. Although, if it is snowing, I think commando soles are absolutely fine!
Dainite-soled boots for a low profile
Rubber soles can be low-profile and elegant and won’t soak up the puddles on the pavement, so will keep your feet warm too. A durable handcrafted Dainite sole is very low key with distinctive recessed studs that provide excellent grip. We also use Vibram rubber soles too.
If you need a formal boot for work, then look for a classic Oxford style, like the Flynn. This is a super smart and classy boot, especially in black. For a more low-slung style, try a chukka. We have added a rubber sole to our favourite Grays style (above) to help our customers get through the winter. If you’re too busy for laces, then grab a Chelsea boot. We have a warm-lined Chelsea – the Matterhorn – for really chilly days. No-one else will know, but your toes will thank you.
For a more relaxed, but no-less stylish, look, a brogue. brown or grain boot will turn it down a notch. The Grantham is a fabulous example of two of these categories. It still retains a sense of lightweight elegance while remaining robust enough to tackle all seasons.
Rugged men’s winter boots
For the weekend and when you are looking for a bit of adventure, the bigger the sole, the better. Our new Galashiels style is refined yet rugged, while the Hawke (below) is all boy scout.
All the boots – and many more – are perfect for the winter months. You need to wear the boots that suit the season. They will team seamlessly with smart attire through to jeans and cargo pants.
Remember: wet feet are never fun, but boots are just brilliant.
