While we are happy to introduce you to our version of the leather monk strap loafer, this style has actually been around for around 100 years. Church’s Shanghai is an iconic style that was revamped in 2009 having originally been created in the late 1920s for the ex-pat customer.
Designed as a shoe to suit the needs of travelling gentlemen, this avant-garde slip-on style featured a monk strap, a kiltie fringe, brogue detail and a rubber sole. The Shanghai remains a staple of Church’s collection to this day.
Herring’s leather monk strap loafer
We have long been inspired by this design and have come up with our own, the Vecchio. As its name suggests, this shoe has been made in Italy using super-soft leathers. We have captured the essence of the 1920s with the single monk strap, brogue adornment and the kiltie fringe.
The Vecchio is designed to capture that vintage aesthetic. While you will appreciate this style as a thoroughly handsome shoe as soon as you open the box, we believe it will become even more distinctive and distinguished as it ages.
You can choose from either a tan or dark brown calf. Both have a full leather lining.

The comfort of the leather monk strap loafer
Comfort is king for this style, as you would expect from a shoe designed for men on their feet. As a loafer, they can be slipped on and off with ease but look like you have buckled them up thanks to the monk strap.
The hybrid sole, which featured a rubber heel and fore part, will give you a spring in your step. The sole is wonderfully flexible and gives you great cushioning as you go about your day. This style looks like a formal shoe but feels like a trainer!

Cost-effective style
We do not think our customers should miss out on such an iconic style because of cost. We have produced the Vecchio at a fraction of the price of its iconic counterpart but have maintained the quality you would expect from a Herring shoe and all the parts that combine to capture this style.
If vintage footwear style is the direction you like to head in, or you just like a shoe that is quick to pull on and comfortable to wear, then we think the Vecchio is worthy of your consideration.
If you like a leather monk strap loafer…
…you may also like some of these styles. We brought out a kiltie monk shoe last year called the Montpellier. Available in burgundy or in a two-tone brown and cream calf, the Montpellier was handmade by Cheaney in Northampton. This shoe was designed with the dashing dandy in mind.
If you like the monk shoe aesthetic, then we have single, double and even triple strap variations. The Fitzrovia is our latest addition to our monk shoe collection and comes in black or burgundy calf. This is a seriously smart shoe.
